Peter was born in Preston, Lancashire. After attending the local Primary school in Lea, Peter attended Ashton-on-Ribble High school, where he sat his O'Levels.

During his time at the school he developed an interest in fell walking, Youth Hostelling and Rugby Union and his main extra curricular activities being music where he became an accomplished Bass player, playing in the Lancashire Schools Big Band for a number of years.

After leaving Ashton in 1975, Peter continued the family tradition and went to Lancaster Royal Grammar School to study for his A levels in the Sciences. Peter continued and developed his Rugby at LRGS.

Elected as the Universities Athletic Association President in 1982, chairing the organisation which ran all the universities sports clubs as well as representing the University on National Sporting bodies.
